Donald Trump’s administration has filed an emergency appeal with the US Supreme Court, asking it to suspend last week’s federal injunction and allow the White House to continue construction on the ballroom while it appeals that lower court’s order to halt the work.
Chief Justice John Roberts set a Tuesday deadline for a response from plaintiffs challenging the ballroom project. An appeals court panel found 3-1 that Trump must stop the construction at the White House because Congress has not approved the project.
The panel’s majority also concluded last week that Trump doesn’t have the unilateral authority to build a 90,000-square-foot (8,400-square-meter) ballroom where the White House’s East Wing stood before he ordered the building demolition last fall.
