bonnie, I think it would indeed be a very aggressive move, attacking on a far wider front than just those who may nor may not be inclined to call for independence. and while I don't expect it any time soon, certainly not in the centenary year of the party, I can readily conceive of it if the ccp starts to run out of patience, or if xjp thinks he needs to advance the timing of his goal for domestic reasons. I just wonder how much in time the ccp will care about keeping those who want good relations with Beijing onside. the mood generally is moving against unification and against the ccp. perhaps particularly among the young, to whom the future belongs.
