Cannot tell you what a relief it is to read Hawthorne after so much Poe.

Hawthorne’s sentences are just so much clearer, so much less tortured, and usually tend to have some plain, comprehensible surface meaning.

It's not all these hints of a whisper of a sensation--I swear to God sometimes Poe approaches late Henry James in turns of obscurity.
