In the U.S., significantly more public funding is allocated to highways than to transit. At the federal level, the long-standing funding split from the Highway Trust Fund has historically directed about 80% of its resources to highways and only 20% to public transit.

And much of that highway spending comes from the general fund, not just the gas tax.
