The Saturday Strike:
People Over Profits, Part I
Tamaki Makaurau had a fine day in the sun too. By most accounts at least 20,000 humans came out waving signs and banners, chanting and marching for nature, taking a stand against the unconscionable, anti-democratic fast track approvals bill.
We here in Pōneke took another focus.
Unions and NGOs protested the callous job cuts.
Not only do job losses affect workers who’ve lost their jobs, but also the extra burden of work on those left holding the can will also be extra stressed in their tasks.
They’ll end up needing to hire many of their old workmates back as “consultants” or “contractors”, like at higher prices too. So much for the efficiency of the private sector.
Meanwhile quality and breadth of services provided by government departments will decline.
Running a country is NOT like running a business. The one single overarching motive for a country cannot, and ought not be the profit motive.
But that’s just what I’d have put on my sign were I not enjoying seeing all the creativity — and emotion — put into designing and presenting these on the day.
