More and more it becomes clear that the real "opposition party" in this election, and presumably those to come, is sheer disinformation. Nostrums like "it's the economy, stupid" used to describe elections. Now it would be, "It's 'perceptions' of the economy, stupid." As I've mentioned in other replies, Nick Lemann's great new piece in the New Yorker is all about this — the gap between what's been happening in the economy, and what anyone is aware of. newyorker.com/magazine/…

I texted this to a friend a couple of hours before reading your col: I definitely feel myself turning inward after what happened. Not that I will no longer be engaged but that it is even more important to have good times with close friends and do things like turn our backyard into a more welcoming gathering space.

Belatedly as I come back on line: Thanks for this. Yes, the whole environment is extremely volatile. Blogs were a Thing — and a thing I really valued — until many other circumstances changed. (Including the dreaded "pivot to video," which drained millions out of many news organizations, and has returned in very different form with TikTok.)

So all is writ in water. But, to extend that imagery, Musk is bringing the fire hose.

I know that he is a smart and creative guy. But he is not showing it in this realm.
