States move to end grocery tax while Idaho gets left behind. By Ronald M. Nate, Ph.D. (08/09/24)

Idaho joins Hawaii, Mississippi, and South Dakota as the only states that fully tax residents' food purchases. Research shows that food prices likely have jumped roughly 20% since early 2021 while wage growth hasn’t kept up.

Dr. Nate summarizes efforts — successful and not — to repeal or sharply reduce grocery taxes throughout the country.

Other states have recognized that food taxes are regressive, immoral, and greatly increase the burden on parents and the poor. Idaho should do the same. State lawmakers and the governor should once and for all repeal the tax on groceries during Idaho’s 2025 legislative session.
