American Thought Leaders: Kari Lake Reveals Plans for Voice of America (12/23/24, podcast/video 14:40). Host: Jan Jekielek. Guest: Kari Lake.

Former TV anchor Kari Lake is President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to head Voice of America (VOA). What would the Voice of America look like under Kari Lake? “Fair and accurate,” according to Ms. Lake.

Background

VOA is a Congressionally funded international broadcaster. It releases content about America and American policies in nearly 50 languages to more than 300 million people weekly around the globe.

Founded in 1942 to combat Nazi propaganda and share the “policies of the United States clearly and effectively,” it later played a major role fighting against communism during the Cold War.

U.S. Agency for Global Media owns VOA and makes the official nomination. After Senate approval, Lake also must be approved by a majority vote of the International Broadcasting Advisory Board.
