I'm reading your book recommendation, The Age of Acrimony, by Jon Grinspan, and learning so much. There are so many political parallels to our current national circumstances. The thing that really surprised me was the engagement of voters in presidential elections, post Civil War. Turnout was 80.9% in 1868.
