Most of my early posts were vague expressions of existential seeking. But the political events of 2016 drastically changed the digital landscape. What had once been a social platform had undeniably transformed into a political one, with identity now taking centre stage. I’m quite attentive to the ways people speak, so my first clue that something was off was that conversations about identity had been replaced with the grating habit of remixing a handful of slogans. It’s one thing to witness the pressure to parrot the ‘right opinion’ within smaller circles, but to watch it unfold globally—across age, class, and culture—was as astonishing as it was disturbing.
