I would hazard a guess from similar stories that the more insidious reason was something like, that she didn't want to acknowledge Jess's virtue. It can't be brought after all and it reduces her own perceived superiority to tattered rags. I assume Jess assumes the best of others and has a reflexive kindness to her that Joan does not.
