Definition
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) can be defined as eight global development goals to be achieved by 2015. The goals are determined by the global community as common development objectives. The goals are based on the actions and targets included in the Millennium Declaration, which was adopted by 189 nations and signed by 147 heads of state and governments worldwide in September 2000 during the United Nations Millennium Summit. The declaration was adopted to reduce poverty, improve health, and promote peace, human rights, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. Accordingly, the targets of the MDGs are to (1) eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; (2) achieve universal primary education; (3) promote gender equality and empower women; (4) reduce child mortality; (5) improve maternal health; (6) combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases; (7) ensure environmental sustainability; and (8) develop a global partnership...
