The tractor-trailer driver who died Wednesday morning after he apparently suffered a medical emergency on Interstate 95 in Stafford County has been identified as 60-year-old Jeffrey Fields of Ruther Glen.
Virginia State Police Sgt. Brent Coffey said the preliminary investigation shows that the vehicle Fields was driving was heading north, about three miles north of the Garrisonville exit, when a medical emergency caused him to run off the right side of the road and crash into a guardrail. He was taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Coffey said the tractor-trailer was carrying several hundred bags of concrete, which spilled onto the highway and blocked lanes. Northbound traffic was stalled for about an hour while emergency workers cleaned up the spill and investigated the crash.
