Philly’s Most Anticipated Fall 2022 Restaurant Openings

Highlights include Georgian khachapuri, vegan scrapple breakfast sandwiches, practically perfect pastries, and much, much more

Every year, before you can even say wooder ice, summer is basically over. While that never gets any less sad, at least in Philly, there are more than a few things to look forward to this fall — and almost all of them include great food and drinks. There’s a great deal of new restaurants, bars, and cafes opening in Philly over the next few months, so the following list includes only a small percentage of the ones we’re looking forward to (but you gotta start somewhere, right?). So go ahead and finish that last cup of lemon water ice from John’s, pack away your floaties, and start making fall plans. Don’t worry, summer will be back again next year.


Saami Somi

September

At Reading Terminal Market, Saami Somi — meaning “three doughs,” named for the market stall’s matsoni yogurt dough, sourdough, and dumpling dough — will serve Georgian food inspired by sibling owners Michael and Donna Kolodesh’s heritage. The stall will be manned by chef Lor Kats, who will be using the three doughs to make Georgian khinkali (dumplings), khachapuri (delicious boats of bread filled with hot cheese and toppings like mushrooms or honey), and supra (aka Georgian small bites, typically served at a celebration). The stall will also have a small number of Georgian sauces, spices, and pickles to take home with you, and some local artisan goods, too.

Roxanne

Mid-September

Pastry wiz Alexandra Holt’s Roxanne has been a limited pop-up for a short while (“open sometimes” is the read on Roxanne’s social media) and like many beloved now-institutions that came before it, a ticket is not always easy to come by. Some time in September, all of that will change when Roxanne opens its doors for good as a dinner BYOB and all-day cafe where devotees of Holt’s impeccable pastries won’t have to decide between sweet or savory. Pastries and dinner — we can all have it all.

Honeysuckle Provisions

The long-awaited market and provisions shop from chefs Cybille St.Aude-Tate and Omar Tate will open in late September in West Philly. It’s a grocery store where you can find to-go items like produce, hot links, eggs, and cheese, and where you can also pick up full meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Everything from a roast chicken to breakfast sandwiches to hoagies can be taken with you — the best part is that everything Honeysuckle sells is imbued with Black storytelling.

Kalaya Fishtown

Ask any Philadelphian and they’ll tell you that Kalaya is one of the best restaurants in Philadelphia. To many of us, it is the best, and with chef Nok Suntaranon’s spicy and rich Thai food, it’s not hard to see why. This fall, an even greater number of Philly residents will get to try Suntaranon’s cuisine, this time at her second restaurant — Kalaya two, in Fishtown.

Wim

226 South Street, Queen Village
November

Bre Furlong

Excitement doesn’t even begin to describe what the city of Philadelphia is feeling in anticipation of local legend Shannon Maldonado’s second, much larger Yowie shop, hotel, and cafe on South Street. The all-day cafe — called Wim — will be a collaboration between Maldonado and the folks behind ReAnimator Coffee and Eeva pizza, so expect coffee (duh), pastries, sandwiches, salads, and more, as well as a pantry of sundry items to purchase.

Pietramala

September

As more and more diners become conscious of the impact eating meat has on our environment, more and more restaurants are opening in Philly that present excellent plant-based alternatives. From chef Ian Graye — whose name you may recognize from his Moto Foto pop-ups, as well as his impressive resume — Pietramala will be a restaurant that puts “plants on a pedestal,” like coal-roasted maitake mushroom with pureed sunchokes.

Tulip

2302 E. Norris Street, Fishtown
Fall

Pasta? And wine? In Philly?? Listen, we simply can’t get enough. Tulip on E. Norris Street is a collaboration between a whole team of folks in the restaurant and drinks industry: James and Zach Wilson (the winemakers at Wayvine), plus chefs Jason Cichonski and Alex Beninato. With all that star power, you can expect dishes like the charcoal-roasted beet ravioli with hibiscus and sumac butter to hit all the right notes.

Enswell

1528 Spruce Street, Center City
Late 2022

The folks behind the popular line of coffee shops, Rival Bros, will open an all-day cafe on Spruce Street, on the ground floor of the Touraine apartment building. There will — naturally — be Rival Bros coffee and a breakfast menu, but at night the cafe will turn into a cool cocktail bar, with a bottle shop selling New Liberty Distillery bottles.

Tabachoy

Fall

If you’re the kind of person who keeps an eye on this for some reason, you may recall that Eater put Tabachoy — the Filipino pop-up started by Chance Anies — on our spring 2022 anticipated openings list, with the hope that the brick-and-mortar would open that summer. Well, as is the way things go sometimes, Anies and his co-owner and wife Maria Anies, had to pull out of their East Passyunk lease because of the city’s slowness with permits. They have a new building in Bella Vista now that requires no construction, so a fall date is expected. Here’s to take two!
