(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The south suburban wrestling community is mourning the loss of a former athlete and coach.

Twenty-five-year-old Dru Worker was killed in an explosion at a Lemont petroleum refinery on Tuesday while working at the plant as a contractor.

The Homewood resident was also assistant wrestling coach at Victor J. Andrew High School in Tinley Park.

“As a VJA assistant wrestling coach, Dru worked to grow our T-Bolts on and off the mats,” High School District 230 wrote in a statement. “He helped instill confidence and sportsmanship in our T-Bolts. Our deepest condolences to the Worker family.”

“He was a great man that was extremely dedicated to helping others grow in the sport of wrestling,” tweeted head wrestling coach Peter Kowalczuk. “I was just with him [Monday] night coaching and talking about the future of wrestling at Andrew HS.”

Worker was also an alumni of Tinley Park Bulldog Wrestling.

The south suburban youth wrestling club says Worker was a Bulldog State Champion and All-State wrestler at Mt. Carmel High School.

“Once a Bulldog…Always a Bulldog,” the organization tweeted.
