Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) An out of contract player that is free to negotiate with any team in the WNBA.
Restricted Free Agent (RFA) An out of contract player eligible for restricted free agency but not unrestricted free agency who had a restricted qualifying offer extended from their current team.

The player may sign an offer sheet with another team, but the prior team has the "right of first refusal" to match the terms. If the prior team decides to match, the player remains with the prior team under the offer sheet terms. If not, they play for the new team under the offer sheet terms.
Reserved Player An out of contract player eligible only for the reserved player designation who has received a reserved qualifying offer from their current team.

A reserved player is free to negotiate a contract with their own team with different terms from the qualifying offer, but they may not negotiate with any other WNBA teams.
Protected VeteranVeteran contract salaries that are guaranteed to the player if they are cut due to lack of skill, injury or illness.

Veteran extensions must be signed by the last day of the regular season.
Key CBA Rules:
  • The first year of a rookie scale contract does not count on the cap until the first day of the regular season if the player remains on the roster, similar to a training camp contract.
  • Salaries may increase or decrease by 3% at most from first season for majority of contracts. The increases do not compound.
  • Most contracts are a maximum of three years, but players can re-sign with their current team for four.
  • Sign-and-trades are permitted with the player's permission by the CBA.
  • Contracts and terms shown above assume a player plays each year of the contract. If a player is suspended (voluntarily or involuntarily) they do not accrue a year of service which can change their status at the end of the contract.
