The India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded an orange alert in several pockets of Vidarbha until Monday, while a yellow warning has been issued throughout Marathwada, Vidarbha and pockets of North Maharashtra until Thursday. The rains, however, have eluded Mumbai where the temperature soared above 36 degrees for the third consecutive day.
Coming on the heels of a yellow alert last week, the weather bureau on Sunday issued an orange alert, stating the likelihood of hailstorm and thunderstorm coupled with gusty winds in Vidarbha region’s Amravati, Akola, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Wardha, Nagpur, Gondia and Yavatmal districts.
While the orange alert will remain in place until Monday, the region is in yellow alert until Thursday at least. Alongside Vidarbha, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for Marathwada and pockets of North Maharashtra.
According to senior scientists from the IMD, thunderstorms are a characteristic feature of the region during this time of the year.
Meanwhile, even as unseasonal showers swept the state, Mumbai continued to swelter at 36.6 degrees on Sunday, recording maximum temperature over 36 degrees for the third consecutive day.
Sushma Nair from IMD Mumbai told the Express that the temperatures in the city are likely to drop from Monday, owing to the arrival of westerly winds.
“We have been receiving northerly winds owing to which the temperatures spiked. From tomorrow, the temperatures can drop and there will be some relief in the discomfort as we are expecting a change in the wind direction and influx of westerlies,” added Nair.
