Muhammad, Amelia and Olivia are the most popular baby names in Manchester, new figures have revealed.
For the first time, the Office for National Statistics have released figures on the top boys’ and girls’ names at a local level.
They have revealed that 140 baby boys in Manchester were named Muhammad in 2017, while 37 girls were called Amelia and 37 Olivia - making them the most popular baby names in our city.
Two other variations on the Arabic name - Mohammed and Mohammad - also made it into the top 10 boys’ names in Manchester.
Also popular were Jacob, Oliver, Leo, Harry, Adam, Noah and Ibrahim, which made up the rest of the top 10.
For girls’, the other most popular names were Isla, Emily, Maryam, Charlotte, Isabella and Sophia, all of which saw at least 20 babies given the name.
There was not much variation in the most popular names across Greater Manchester.
Bolton, Bury, Oldham and Rochdale also saw Muhammad take the top spot for boys names, while Harry was the most popular in Salford and Trafford, Alfie and Oliver in Stockport, and Oliver in Tameside and Wigan.
Meanwhile, the top girls’ names across the region were generally Amelia or Olivia - apart from in Tameside and Wigan, which saw Ava come out on top.
