fwiw I’ve realized recently that my own ambition scales drastically with how much I enjoy what I’m doing. At a previous job that I hated, my ambition began and ended at “wake up, go to work, go home at five”; nowadays it’s a lot closer to “supervise the building of a Dyson sphere”. I think it would do people well to figure out what they want to do, discover ambition in that, and figure out in which direction they could point their gift so as to do the most good — eg if your telos is debate, don’t settle for always winning the argument with your girlfriend, but don’t take that logical conclusion to be striving to become the best family court lawyer — try to orient yourself so as to strive for being the world’s best advocate for AI safety or rape victims or what have you
