There have been a number of excellent articles including in The Atlantic which have pointed out that we as a nation haven’t built spaces for the commons in decades. We no longer gather. When we no longer gather we no longer see each other as human and with shared desires and of course, rights. As someone who has taught connecting skills for years, Dr. Williams, our intense focus on the self vs selflessness and the grace it gives is is what has killed our country.
There was at one time an understanding that something called “the commons” was a thing worth nurturing. We even used the word to describe a facet of this concept — Boston Commons, for example. These days our civic institutions have lost sight of the value and importance of creating a cohesive society with a shared commons that includes public spaces, the arts, and media.
