UPDATE: We now know the name of the man killed by ICE in Biddeford, Maine.

Neighbors and locals have identified him as Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a 26-year-old Colombian man who lived nearby with his wife and young daughter.

Guerrero was legally authorized to work in the United States and had been issued a Social Security number.

Officials now say Guerrero was not the person ICE originally intended to target during its operation.

The government alleges that Guerrero attempted to flee by driving “in the direction of” an officer. But a witness described seeing a federal SUV ram Guerrero’s smaller car multiple times. After Guerrero was pulled from the vehicle with blood on his face and head, the witness reported hearing him say:

“But I tried to stop.”

The agents were reportedly not wearing body cameras.

Nearby surveillance footage exists, but Maine State Police asked the business owner not to release it publicly.

The officer who fired has been placed on leave while the Maine attorney general’s office, the FBI and other agencies investigate.

Joan Sebastian Guerrero was 26 years old. He was a husband and a father.
