Objectively, the Democrats are not an opposition party and never have been. In fact the U.S. is a literal two-party state where true political parties cannot legally operate. Also both ‘parties’ serve very similar masters, some of which are not even American.
Across American society, the level of complicity and passivity favoring Trump and his accomplices is simply stunning by true first-world democratic standards. This is definitely systemic.
If there were enough moral and political health left in the populace and civil institutions there would already be a bottom-up opposition movement and it would be modeling its main push on Ukraine 2013-2014. It’s a similar situation on the whole.
Instead, we have a mostly unopposed pro-Russian coup going into its fifteenth month, a fake opposition party, no opposition leadership, complicit media and compliant institutions, a ruling class with no loyalty to the country, democracy, rule of law or allies, and a methodical hijacking of popular resentment designed to make it politically harmless to a de facto federal dictatorship (yes, that is the true impact and likely purpose of Indivisible).
And yet the MAGA monster is not so hard to defeat domestically. It can only collapse the minute it loses Trump. And It so happens that his pathologies are so extreme that he can be worn down, even potentially disabled, through actions by individual members of Congress, subject to existing rules. These actions solely require individual initiatives. The main tactic is the sustained filing of articles of impeachment, as well as related discharge petitions designed to force votes, in the House. That is all that is required to thoroughly destabilize an ailing, half-demented malignant narcissist whose self-image is his ultimate priority, more perhaps than self-preservation itself. Trump is psychologically incapable of dealing with what amounts to torpedoes repeatedly hitting his narcissistic ego below the water line.
Which is why the fact that Trump has been protected not only by Republicans, but far more significantly by Democrats for so many years, including two impeachments and trials under Pelosi that were designed to have the absolute minimal impact during his first term, is the single most important political reality in America today. The Democrats have prevented a takedown for years. The fact that popular mobilization against the regime is now controlled by Democratic operatives and donors, that all pressure is thus diverted from Congress, the fact that this organized and funded ‘opposition movement’ does not set the removal of Trump from office as its central, urgent goal, is the best explanation for a Maidan-like movement designed to topple the American Yanukovych not controlling the streets of central Washington, D.C. at this very moment. The Republicans are not preventing it — the goddamn Democrats are.
With a true opposition movement, led by genuine opposition leaders, Congress would already be under siege and both Republican and Democratic leaders would be losing control of events inside both chambers. The traitor-in-chief — and his top accomplices — would be under direct, nonstop attack from representatives and senators responding to overwhelming popular pressure right on their doorstep. This pitched battle, extending for months, would dominate the news and politics worldwide. It would dwarf the astroturfed J6 riot and just about anything that has hit the federal capital since the mid-sixties.
So we have a problem in this country which is very similar to the one Ukrainians solved at home over a decade ago. Unlike them, we in this country are at no risk of foreign invasion. The ugly truth is that the United States is more corrupt, and suffers from more covert foreign interference at the highest levels, than Ukraine ever was or did. Americans, who have been brainwashed for decades into accepting what no one else would tolerate in the First World, are now trapped between traitors and betrayers, while Putin and other tyrants have had their hooks into the two-party state, doing business with the ruling class that controls it, for far too long.
