This "vibe coding" interview mistake could cost you the AI PM job at Google.
Remember the viral Reddit post claiming Google's doing "vibe coding" interviews for AI PM roles?
I sat down with Jaclyn Konzelmann, Director of AI Product at Google.
Here’s what she actually looks for:
Her red flag: candidates who start building immediately.
Ideas and knowing WHAT to build matter more.
Here’s what top AI PM hiring managers actually want:
Approach the interview like a product design test
Propose your approach before diving in
Ask: “This is my approach. Does it make sense?"
Show product thinking FIRST, execution second
Jacqueline shared a pro tip:
"The goal of an interview isn't to trip you up. I truly just want to know how candidates think and if they're a good fit."
But here's the catch:
If you keep asking what the expectations are over and over, it creates awkward conversation.
Instead: Suggest, then validate.
Show initiative.
Demonstrate product thinking.
Then check whether you're aligned.
The ambition to build is nice. But building something good is what really matters.
This is how to succeed in the vibe coding interview!
