Here's everything you need to do to become an AI PM in 2026 (and potentially get an OpenAI $500K+ job):
People are still sharing my plan from Mar 2024.
Here's the actual up to date version:
Step 1 - Shape your content diet
As Sergey Brin said, "you can't go a month without following AI news." So find your favorites. I recommend:
YouTube: Karpathy, Wolfe, Isenberg, Dwarkesh
Newsletters: The Batch, Superhuman, Nate Jones
Twitter: Yuchen Jin, Dario Amodei, Jim Fan, Eth Mollick
LinkedIn: Ruben Hassid, Jake Ward, Pawel Huryn

Step 2 - Take relevant courses
People love to hate on courses but they work!
a. Foundational: AI for everyone, elements of AI
b. Intermediate: AI PM certificate, Karpathy's course
c. Advanced: NLP specialization, CS230 by Andrew Ng

Step 3 - Gain hands-on experience
You don't need to be an engineer. You need to ship something. Build something real with AI coding tools:
Stage 1: Set up Cursor
Stage 2: Build a basic app with AI-generated code
Stage 3: Add auth and a marketing site
Stage 4: Integrate Stripe for payments

Step 4: Structure your portfolio
Hiring managers spend 6 seconds on your resume. Your portfolio is where you make them stop.
Make it stand out: Use visuals, keep it concise
Connect to PM: Draw parallels to AI challenges
Make it discoverable: SEO, LinkedIn pinned content

Step 5: Network strategically
I'd guess > 80% of top AI PM jobs are filled through networking. Build relationships:
Communities: Reddit, Twitter, LinkedIn Groups, GitHub
Events: NeurIPS, ICML, AI Engineer Summit
Connections: Informational interviews, mentorships
Content: Blog, newsletter, podcast, LinkedIn posts

Step 6: Snag interviews
Applications alone won't cut it. Nail everything:
Resume: Show your AI journey, quantify impact
Cover letters: Connect the dots, short and sweet
Network: Informational interviews turn into real ones Target companies: Product focus matters

Step 7: Ace the homework & interview
You've done the work. Now you need to prove it in 45 minutes.
Nail the homework
Learn the interviews
AI Product Sense, AI Technical Understanding
