Zeb Evans outlined his vision of the future for 10X PMs:
- Merging with the design role
- Not shipping code to production
- Just building in a playground to iterate
- Even more time meeting with customers
This is one vision of the future of PM, and a compelling one at that. It doesn’t work for every company. In fact, it likely won’t work for most. But it does point to a fact…
The PM role is changing. Some places it’s becoming more design focused. Other places it’s becoming more engineering focused. Still at others, it’s becoming more “traditional PM” focused.
None are right or wrong. The PM role has always been a Fabrege egg: each company has its own implementation of it. In this era of AI driven layoffs, it’s become more important than ever to understand what YOUR company wants out of YOU and develop those skills.
And for product leaders, the onus is on you to define this clearly for your teams. The last thing we want PMs to do is follow what someone said online, when that’s not what you want them to do at your company!
It’s more important than ever to define how time should be used and what skills are valued. Whether you agree with Zeb or not (the layoffs are unfortunate), he’s doing the right thing by calling out what he wants his PMs to do.
Your move.
