When I downsized, I had to be extremely selective about what to bring to my new home. On the upper shelf in my cozy new office is a one-of-a-kind print that my friend Flynn gifted me. It’s a tribute to The Isolation Journals, the global community that began as a 30-day journaling pandemic project by Suleika Jaouad. Flynn and I were among the original participants who formed a close and lasting friendship. Flynn makes incredible art that starts as French press coffee dregs that he pours into his sink, arranges creatively, photographs and manipulates with filters. He calls it SinkCoffiti and I profiled him about it for The Seattle Times a few years ago. I cherish this gift because it’s a symbol of friendship and community and because The Isolation Journals launched my personal writing journey and changed my life immeasurably.
