This work is titled Britomart Redeems Faire Amoret and was painted by William Etty in 1833. It features a scene from the famous Renaissance poem The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser. Etty wanted to highlight the themes of honor and chastity. In this scene, the female warrior Britomart kills the evil magician Busirane. He was holding a woman named Amoret captive and Britomart also saved her. It is important to note that in the poem, Busirane tortured Amoret but the artist didn’t want to show the violence, so he left her unharmed. What makes this work so remarkable is the twisting and dramatic motion. The figures are all forced into the center of the painting, heightening the fear and tension. There are also multiple references to classical Greece and Rome, especially in the pose of Amoret. Today, this work is in the collection of the Tate Britain.
