This work is titled The Immaculate Conception and it was painted by Italian artist Guido Reni in 1627. The artist was famous for his balanced and elegant composition. In fact, he even earned the name “the Divine” during his own lifetime! In the Catholic faith, the Immaculate Conception refers to the Marian doctrine that she was free of the original sin from the moment she was conceived, allowing her, in turn, to conceive the son of God without sin. Reni highlights this doctrine beautifully. Mary is the central figure, her grace and beauty emphasized with the golden background. She is surrounded by angels and clouds shaped like putti. It creates a vision of heaven appropriate for the subject. Although this work now is in the collection of the Met Museum, it was once hung in the Cathedral of Seville in Spain.
