The actor who played Barabbas in The Passion of the Christ, Pietro Sarubbi, was an atheist at the time of filming.

He has since spoken about how his conversion began during the scene in which Barabbas is released and Christ is condemned.

It is a strange grace: to portray the man who has been freed, and then starting from there, to begin to understand the price of freedom.
