When you mentioned about Godzilla looming over Shinjuku and reading Pynchon - it reminded me of something. There was an article in LitHub awhile ago that mentioned that Pynchon may have had an unfinished book set in Tokyo about an insurance adjuster assessing the damage done Tokyo after Godzilla:
“For Vulture,vulture.com/2013/08/tho…in 2013, Boris Kachka wrote one of the most complete biographies of the man who refuses to appear in public, and notes that Pynchon’s Japanese science-fiction novel might refer to an abandoned project about an insurance adjuster hired to survey damage done to Tokyo by Godzilla.”
