If Stripe Acquired Openrouter what would that enable?

As you know, OpenRouter is a unified API gateway that aggregates hundreds of AI language models into a single interface.

Stripe could have a bigger role in the so-called Agentic Economy. Think about it, OpenRouter already uses Stripe to accept payments from its global customer base across credit cards and local payment methods, including Alipay, WeChat Pay, Amazon Pay, Cash App, and Google Pay. Stripe is in talks to acquire PayPal as well. This is another way for Stripe to get exposure to China.

Stripe would become one of the central nexus points of machine to machine payments. (M2M). OpenRouter's daily volume processes billions of tokens, Stripe would be a fairly good custodian of such a valuable access juncture in Agentic AI’s future.

Founded in 2023, OpenRouter last valued at $1.3 Billion (but now worth in the area of $10 Bn with an M&A premium in such a proposed deal) operates as an intermediary layer between model developers and enterprise users, allowing companies to compare, access, and switch between hundreds of proprietary and open-weight AI models.

Owning an important part of the routing tier would give Stripe visibility into real-time token unit economics, price drops, and usage surges.

Stripe could become and build a programmatic wallet provision & micro-metered token execution. OpenRouter is looked at it another way, basically a payment system for LLM tokens.

I never imagined Stripe’s role in Agentic AI like this but on some level it could become a default “operating system” for autonomous agents if this passes.
