I will avidly defend LessWrong here from guilt by association. This would be downvoted to oblivion there, and probably removed outright. Yudkowsky himself is a strong transhumanist (he just believes AGI will almost certainly kill everything). However, it does illustrate a major problem that AI safety has, and one which will only become worse as AI becomes more politically salient. Outside rarefied rationalist circles, this cause naturally selects for low IQ populists - the socially conservative, economically illiberal part of the political compass. Over time, the sort of lower IQ demographics who are drawn there will come to dominate it. Think the Purity First faction in Deus Ex.
