Allman Brothers Band bassist Berry Oakley died at 24 on 11-11-72 in a motorcycle crash in Macon, GA.

In Brothers and Sisters, I wrote: "Oakley, a former guitarist, didn’t abandon melody or frontal attack when he switched instruments for a gig with the garage pop band Tommy Roe and the Roemans, with whom the Chicago native had made his way to Florida. His prime influences on his new instrument were the godfathers of progressive bass playing: Jack Casady, Phil Lesh and Jack Bruce."
