AUDIT OF WEIRD: JAN 2026 / WEEK ONE: First week back at my desk. Only just finished the last of the Quality Street and already the world order’s on the brink of collapse. Ah, well. By today’s standards, 2026 had a pretty good run. Shitty mood all week. Spent hours composing cold-call emails to editors, knowing they’ll get ignored, days filling in a grant form, knowing it will get rejected, all against a backdrop of utter despair. At least I got in some meditation and exercise. An hour spent looking at what I need to be doing in terms of my fiction-writing turned into a full-blown, bit-scary career review. Fixative tasks now in place, at least. Starting the new Hawk the Slayer next week. Let’s see if a bit of magic and a few swordfights can’t cheer me up…
