It’s an evil rom-com smitten by the ebb and flow not of love, but of power and control. Sam Raimi creates a tropical EC horror comic with extra blood and berry-flavoured barf.
A gangly Rachel McAdams is wonderful, a doofus turned demon, as loveable as she is stomach-turning. Baby-faced Dylan O’Brien gets less to play with as her boss, but it’s still mesmerising to watch him squirm between vengeful alpha and tantruming toddler.
Writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift put a deceptive amount of meat on these bones. The movie isn’t just about the dark thrill of payback, it’s about patriarchy making monsters of women too.
Overall, a hoot, a date-movie from hell.
