When I started making cocktails in the early 10s, Eagle Rare was a house bourbon for any number of cocktail bars. It wasn’t quite dirt cheap, but you could usually find it for about $35, and sometimes less. It’s great whiskey, with a particular dried-fruit note that sharpens the taste without subtracting from the oaky, aged, vanilla rich…

The absolute craziest thing just happened right now at a thrift store in the town near my farm.

I was at a local church thrift store with my mom looking for some spring shirts.

We were about to leave when something told me to wander over to a part of the store I don’t normally go in.

I walked up to the jacket rack and one of the jackets really stood out to me. I loved the patriotic designs on it. I grabbed it and walked it back over to my mom.

“Mom check this jacket out, looks cool,” I said.

“Are you sure that’s not a Huba Jacket??” she said.

My aunt Barbara Huba (my mom’s sister) ran a super successful original jackets business in the 80s and 90s in New York and California. It’s been 30+ years since she made any jackets.

We looked for a tag and couldn’t find one. I figured there was no way this was a jacket MY aunt made.

“It looks reversible, just like the ones Barb made…” my mom said.

She turned the coat around, looked closer, and sure enough, there was the Huba Jackets label.

I could not believe it. We immediately told the women running the store about what we had just found. It made everyone’s day.

Needless to say, I will be wearing my aunt’s jacket everywhere I go this summer!!! Unreal!!
