I think the decline in formal reading (ie. sitting with a book or a magazine) is due to the daily exhaustion of our language processing capabilities thru texting, emailing, social media, and the like. Past generations didn’t have these things competing with the written word, nor did these things eat up the finite stores of attention that handle reading/language. We’ve lost our bandwidth for sustained attention because of how available this digital tech became.
