The far left takeover of the Democratic Party has been going on for some time, but many have just now noticed. Consider the spotlight on Zorhan Mamdani’s recent elevation to mayor of the largest and most influential city in America. That spotlight has served to create its own kind of wokeness.

Democrats brought a baby spotted hyena into the house and now, surprise, 80 of his closest friends are at the door. (Or was AOC the hyena cub?)

Democratic strategists describe this progressive movement as a “generational shift,” with Mamdani’s win a beacon signaling for bolder progressive goals within the their party. The shift brings with it a wish list that includes the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, anti-corporate legislation, and ironically, affordability.

Whether AOC or Mamdani was the first cub in this new clan, one thing seems certain, Bernie’s the club’s patriarch. He’s built the clout with many younger voters and remains the party’s most popular figure. As one 2024 election “autopsy” put it, “It’s Bernie Sanders’ Democratic Party now.”

If the 2026 midterms see progressive gains, it’ll affirm the party’s direction. Losses could force additional party introspection, but regardless, the infection shows no signs of reversing.
