“Listening to the readings and hymns during the Matins of Great and Holy Friday, it is easy to walk away with a stark impression: that it was the Jews who crucified Christ, while we stand among His faithful followers. This contrast, however, must be treated with great caution—and greater theological depth.”

An early birthday gift: the 1983 second printing hardback edition with slipcase. My relationship with Francis Schaeffer’s writings has evolved somewhat since I first read him (another post for another day), but this much is true: Those books turned my world upside down in high school/college and, along with C.S. Lewis’ work at the same t…

I’m not american. But I understand well Trump when aligning just fair taxation among countries. And this will bring back to US some industry for sure. And I know plenty well, living in the most taxed country on earth and knowing many industries very well. The cost might be for american consumers, they lived in a taxation paradigme for decades.

Reciprocal. Yes. Not reciprocal +.

Atlantisarch's avatar

I’m in France. We do taxe american products with a 20% VAT (minimum, not including specific taxes and not including fees), but our products are not when sended to the US. 20% is just reciprocal. US consumers will cry for sure. They were the biggest consumer on the planet, wonders why… (i have near family members in the US btw)

No. Saw this some time ago. Just thought it aligned with Trumps delusional view of protectionism. Great minds.

Ironically, Milton Friedman's country America became rich and eclipsed the world's largest economies by stopping their businesses competing in America through force (tariffs), the revenue from which was used to fund government operations instead of tax. This was the “American System”.

Love Milton but destroying the middle class to import cheaper goods is dumb and every country knows it. Elite professors don’t care about good manufacturing jobs with benefits.
