The app for independent voices

During this Lenten season I will be sharing excerpts from the writings of the German Christian (Movement) during the Third Reich along with excerpts of oppositional writings from Karl Barth and Dietrich Bonhoeffer (and others) from the same period. I’ll post these excerpts and my own thoughts on social media, I’ll write about them in depth on Substack and I’ll share corresponding meditations on my podcast.

The poison of Christian Nationalism has deeply infected the Church in America (and elsewhere globally), and my prayer is to play a small part in leaching the poison out of our system — even if only in my own heart, family, and community.

The words of the German Christians are haunting because they sound precisely like what is preached from many pulpits in our country today, and bellowed from the mouths of politicians and others who know that harnessing religious fervor is supremely important in consolidation of power.

(This Lenten series isn’t an attack on any person, but on particularly destructive ideologies, theologies, and abuses of power.)
