For Alta Journal, I reviewed Eric Lichtblau’s AMERICAN REICH, which contextualizes the 2018 murder of Blaze Bernstein in Orange County by a member of a neo-Nazi group within a new era of white supremacy. This was a difficult assignment, as I have gotten to know Blaze after his death through one of my best friends, who was his academic adviser at Penn, and through the community at the Kelly Writers House. I hope my perspective here highlights why some of Lichtblau’s some of choices hampered what is otherwise an important study on a topic that is disturbingly timely:
