Our story on David Long Jr. took second place in the APSE’s Long Feature category, C division.

We’ve got more longform stories cookin’ this offseason, too.

Thank you to everyone who makes Go Long possible.

Is Xabi Alonso still worth the hype? A pretty hot take from me on the latest Gegenpressing podcast:

I got my first “fan” who was really just a pr0n account trolling for followers. Blocked and reported, as they say. That kind of garbage will bring the site down faster than anything else. Keep it out of Substack. And if you're engaging in this kind of behavior, you need to start praying that Jesus shows you a better way to use the gifts he gave you.

I have known this to happen many times over the years.

I once marked an undergraduate dissertation arguing that music would be a suitable language for first contacting aliens, using only three pieces of evidence (each repeatedly): the poet T. E. Longfellow’s assertion that music is a universal language; the fact that the Beatles were banned in soviet-era Czechoslovakia; and Koko the painting gorilla (whose case, unbeknownst to the student, like all “talking” animals involved serious academic malpractice, including male handlers training Koko to sexually assault female handlers).

It was a thing of beauty. I failed it but was overruled by *ahem* the student’s dissertation supervisor who had encouraged the project.
