Make money doing the work you believe in

G is for Garden

For years we gardened a full 1/3 acre and offered weekly CSA bags to a dozen families. Life happened and we had about a 7 year gap where we just couldn’t keep up like we once had. The last two years we’ve started again, in the intentional way of empty nesters, not planning to feed an army.

We moved from our 1/3 acre garden to raised beds, comprised of cattle tanks and whisky barrels, closer to the house. This weekend, if the weather cooperates, we are going to expand our area for containers, and prep for a new chicken enclosure.

There is something so fulfilling about tending the garden. Walking the space every evening, in wonder of the new growth, pulling stray weeds, harvesting and canning the bounty; it is meditative. In uncertain times it also feels empowering. A way to distract from scrolling while doing something outside that also saves money.

As someone who has gardened from large scale to small scale (picture tomato plants on an apartment balcony), don’t let the thought of starting a garden overwhelm you! Just start small. You may find that it is an infectious feeling of excitement you get from simply growing cherry tomatoes! Who knows where it may lead you! This post is part of the Blogging A-Z 2026 challenge.
