If you want to do Machine Learning, don’t become a Data Scientist

After 7 years in this career, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seriously considered building/deploying an ML model as a solution.

And I’m not the only one.

Most data science problems don’t require machine learning, they require the fundamentals:

  • Statistical modeling

  • Making inferences

  • Designing experiments.

These are the skills you’ll use most.

If you love building models, become a Machine Learning Engineer. Otherwise, make sure the DS roles you’re applying for align with your career goals.
