Cosmo Kramer as Trump Voter

Like many of my social circle, I don’t have much personal contact with supporters of Donald Trump, so it is easy to believe the worst about them. But there is one fictional character who many of us love but who is probably a Trump voter. That is Cosmo Kramer.

Here are a few reasons why I think he might gravitate to Trump despite being a midtown New Yorker.

  • Education: He didn’t complete high school and is a GED recipient.

  • Conspiracy theorist: Along with Newman, he believes in various conspiracy theories like the Bermuda Triangle and space aliens. He is convinced that scientists have developed a pig man and hidden it from us.

  • Suspicion of the deep state: He wants to stop the mail. He is a scofflaw who accumulates but doesn’t pay parking tickets including one for having no doors on his car.

  • Opposition to government regulations: He dislikes low-flow shower heads and buys illegal replacements from the former Yugoslavia. He opposes government smoking bans and sets up a private smoking club in his apartment.

  • Election fixer: He helps Jerry’s dad to fix the retirement community presidential election by serving as Morty’s puppet and bribing board members with electronic organizers.

  • Serially failed entrepreneur: He frequently comes up with get-rich-quick schemes - make your own pizza, a bladder system for ships, a perfume that smells like the beach, a bra for men - that as a colleague put it have “strong scam vibes”. He even tries to exploit the homeless for a rickshaw business.

  • Nostalgia for the old days: He wears vintage clothes and configures the area in front of his apartment to resemble “Anytown, USA”. He likes the 50s-style hair-do of Elaine’s friend and feels at home in a Florida retirement community. He is an avid follower of the Miss America pageant and drives an old gas-guzzling car.

  • Distrust of institutions: He encourages George not to use the hospital and seek alternative care. He himself goes to the veterinarian instead of the doctor.

  • Hobbies: He is an avid golfer and has a gambling addiction. He attends a Yankees legends camp and is an admirer of DiMaggio.

  • Personality: He makes impolite and politically incorrect remarks - eg, to George’s girlfriend with a big nose - because he is simply a truth teller.

On the other side of the equation, we might mention that he is a “hipster doofus”, that he is intrigued by the theories of Elaine’s communist boyfriend, and that he goes on strike against H&H bagels for a higher wage.

Nevertheless, he shows that it is possible to make a Trump supporter lovable.
