Today marks 8,900 days of the existence of the “war on terror” prison at Guantánamo Bay, where 15 men are still held, in varying states of fundamental lawlessness, and to mark the occasion I’m holding up the latest photo in an ongoing photo campaign I’ve been running for the Close Guantanamo website since 2018.

This is my message today: “I don’t know if Donald Trump even remembers much about who is held at Guantánamo, ten years since he bragged, on the campaign trail before he first became president, that he was going to ‘load up Guantánamo Bay with some bad dudes.’ In his first term, he sealed the prison shut, and in his second term he is doing the same, although last year, shamefully, he decided to co-opt it to hold hapless migrants seized on the US mainland on his disgraceful ‘war on migrants.’

“Today, with my fellow campaigners, I still stand defiant in the face of his indifference, and am proud to tell him that keeping Guantánamo open is a disgrace, and ought to be source of shame for him, if he had any notion what shame is.”
