Netanyahu jokes about expanding the occupation of Gaza from 60% to 70%

Sickening. On Israeli TV, Netanyhu discusses how, at the start of the US-imposed ceasefire deal last October, Israel withdrew its forces to occupy half of Gaza, but has steadily increased that proportion to 60%. Then he says, “My directive is to move to” — at which point the audience interrupts, shouting “100%” — before concluding, chuckling, “Wait, let’s go in order. First 70%. Let’s start with that.”

It seems that the US ceasefire deal is officially dead, after Trump’s catatonic indifference and Netanyahu’s opportunism, which is dire news for the Palestinians, and for Hamas, who had negotiated in good faith and had released all the remaining Israeli hostages, only to discover that the US had no interest in holding Israel to the terms of the ceasefire deal, increasing aid and allowing reconstruction, and preventing further violent attacks by Israel as negotiations continued regarding Hamas’ disarmament and the transfer of power to a Palestinian technocratic committee.

As I discussed in a detailed article four days ago, “The Intractable Search for Peace in Gaza” (see the link in the first comment below), Nickolay Maldenov, the Bulgarian ex-UN official appointed to be the administrator of Trump’s “Board of Peace” for Gaza, had been demanding Hamas’ full disarmament before any further progress could be made towards rescuing the Palestinians from the dire, Israeli-imposed medieval squalor in which most of them are now forced to live, but even that plan now seems to have collapsed, as recent targeted assassinations by Israel of senior Hamas leaders in Gaza seem to have showed.

Is there any mechanism left that can stop Netanyahu from fulfilling his dreams, and those of his repulsive audience, cheering for 100% total occupation, which, lest we forget, would be 100% totally illegal under international law?
