When we bring an axe where a scalpel is needed, we swing at the surface of things, plundering thoughtlessly as we go. It’s efficient, and efficiency is tempting when we’re weary. But all of that surface-level swinging and efficiency costs us something in the end—not just kids, but educators too—the ability to discern and the ability to do more than simply obey, but really learn and play in the shades of grey. And that’s what learning is all about. And being human.
Change in schools is messy and lately, it’s also loud.
I just published an article that puts words to something many of us have been feeling but haven’t quite named yet. Thanks to Angela Stockman for offering the perfect image: the difference between bringing an axe and bringing a scalpel to instructional change.
