Some developmental theories propose extending Kegan along Wilber's lines, adding stages such as the classic Advaita Witness Position.

A simpler closure within that framework is:

When one becomes object to meaning-making itself, that is the dissolution of the framework.

Kegan: "We are subject to those elements of...meaning-making that we are unable to reflect upon; we are object to those we can take as object...."

When meaning-making can be felt as an “external” landscape, then meaning-making no longer happens compulsively.

We cannot "make one’s own meaning”, any more than we can “make one’s own vision”.

Rather we have freedom of response with respect to our vision, unlike a frog whose compulsive action on seeing a black dot move in a certain way is to flick its tongue.

When the landscape of meaning is sensed as an external landscape, we have freedom of response with respect to the meaning-making that arises of its own accord.
