Energy: being able to participate in any particular way
Freedom: being unconstrained from participating in any particular way.
Why do we care? To have the freedom and energy to do what the here-and-now calls for.
Two uses of energy with respect to freedom:
To cultivate freedom. Energy can be like stretching: the mechanical release of binding and compulsory patterns. Energy practices can therefore cultivate the ground for complete freedom, as a complement to relaxation of patterns (the "leap"-in-itself to complete freedom cannot be rigidly orchestrated or strategized, as that is trying to construct freedom from unfree rigidity).
To enjoy freedom ("enjoy" in the sense of "to have for one's use or benefit"). Freedom does not intrinsically bring capability: if you stand up to dance, completely without inhibition, you may have a wide range of possibilities, but you won't have possibilities that reflect dance forms you have never engaged with, beyond inspired imitation (which, however, can be a fine thing!)
In a tradition like Nyingma Vajrayana, Tantra, the Energy aspect, can be viewed two ways: pre-Dzogchen and post-Dzogchen. Dzogchen is the freedom aspect. Pre-Dzogchen, Tantra can function to cultivate freedom. Post-Dzogchen, Tantra can function to increase enjoyment of freedom.
Cultivating freedom is a response to the soil of the individual and so may look differently for each individual. Do they require more water? More sun? More fertilizer?
Enjoyment of freedom is limited by time, circumstances, and individual temperament. Hence, it generally eventually appears as an aesthetic display bounded by time-location-individual. When appreciating the aesthetic display of someone enjoying their freedom, remember, that when your enjoyment of freedom almost certainly cannot and will not have the same aesthetic.
